The Fjarðará river is one of Iceland's best-kept angling secrets, licences are on sale at the Shell station. And the river is not only for anglers: why not take a walk along the riverbank to see the many picturesque waterfalls? The best known of them is Gufufoss.

Vestdalur is a grassy valley at the north of the fjord, famed for its beauty and birdlife. One of the first sites in East Iceland to be listed on the Nature Conservation Register.

Vestdalseyri is a spit of land formed by sedimentation from the Vestdalsá river. Vestdalseyri was a separate village until the middle of the 20th century, with its own school, shops, services, and even its own newspaper. Seyðisfjörður Church originally stood at Vestdalseyri, but was later moved into the main village. Traces of old buildings still remain in this beautiful natural spot where the waterfall tumbles into a gorge.

Dvergasteinn (Dwarves' Rock) may be seen down on the shore; according to folklore, the rock moved across the fjord of its own volition, and indeed it is quite different from all the rock around it.

Þórarinsstaðir is an ancient farm site, where excavations in 1998 unearthed remains of a stave church from the early days of Christianity in Iceland (after 1000 AD). This is the subject of the exhibition, Mörk heiðni og kristni (Between Heathenism and Christianity) at the East Iceland Museum, Egilsstaðir.

Skálanes, the southernmost farm in Seyðisfjörður, is now only inhabited in summer, from May to September. Accommodation and cooking facilities are offered at Skálanes. About 100.000 birds of 40 species breed at Skálanes, and so this is a Mecca for birdwatchers.

Brimnes on the north shore of Seyðisfjörður was for centuries one of the major fishing estates in the east of Iceland. Traces of many old buildings remain. A lighthouse stands at Brimnes. A walk out to Brimnes in fine weather is an unforgettable experience.

Loðmundarfjörður, the next fjord to Seyðisfjörður, is all but uninhabited today, a delightful place to visit, far off the beaten track. A footpath leads across the mountains from Seyðisfjörður to Loðmundarfjörður via Hjálmadalsheiði; this 12-kilometre walk takes about six hours.

kayak and mountainbiketrips. Hlynur Oddsson, an experienced sailor, knows the fjord like the back of his hand. He offers 2-3 hour kayak or mountainbiketrips for groups of 3 to 4. Shorter kayak trips in the lagoon (Lón) for children are also available, tel. 472-1551 / 861-7789.

Sea fishing, cruising and bird watching. In the safe hands of a local fisherman, Haraldur Árnason; you get the opportunity to fish, process your catch, see the fjords secret treasures and visit the puffins and other seabird's magnificent settlements. Also possible to have your processed catch served for dinner in Hótel Aldan restaurant. In winter season seabird hunting is available.

Exclusive Hunting. Various hunting tours lead by a native guide who understands and knows the land, weather and landscape by heart. Reindeer, Arctic Fox, Geece and Ptarmigan. Contact: Þetta netfang er varið fyrir ruslrafpósti, þú þarft að hafa Javascript virkt til að skoða það or +354 861 7008

At Skagi (opposite Fjarðarsel) is a 9-hole putting green for golfers. The Club's homepage

The Seyðisfjörður swimming pool is a pleasant indoor pool with hot pools and outside activity area. Sports centre with full-size basketball court, sauna, hot pool, solarium and fully-equipped gym.
Open all year.

Only 9 km from Seyðisfjörður by road, and 17 km from Egilsstaðir, is the Stafdalur ski area on Fjarðarheiði, offering plenty of variety for skiers and a 1000 m ski lift. Cross-country skiing is possible on Fjarðarheiði far into the summer.
